Experts say bird flu threat small despite Cambodian fatality - ABC News

Image
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia -- A top World Health Organization official, reacting to the death of an 11-year-old girl in Cambodia infected by bird flu, said Friday the recent global spread of the virus and human infections are "worrying." Dr. Sylvie Briand, the WHO's director for epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention, said the U.N. agency is "in close communication with the Cambodian authorities to understand more about the outbreak." Speaking ahead of a meeting in Geneva on influenza vaccines, Briand called the global situation concerning the virus "worrying given the wide spread of the virus in birds around the world, and the increasing reports of cases in mammals, including humans." "WHO takes the risk from this virus seriously and urges heightened vigilance from all countries," she said. Independent experts also have expressed concern over a wave of bird flu that has spread through much of the world since late 2021, posing a potentia

Operation on wrong leg was just one of the issues state says it found at central Pa. hospital - PennLive

Lancaster General Hospital was recently faulted by the state for mistakes including operating on the wrong leg and employees violating hand hygiene rules intended to protect patients from infections. And those infractions came within two months of Lancaster General being cited for failing to fill the insulin pump of a patient with diabetes, and failing to file state-required reports related to a new mother who died of internal bleeding. Those and other problems were found during a series of "special monitoring" investigations by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Health department spokeswoman Maggie Barton said such investigations happen when the department has reason to believe there are ongoing problems, and the information came anonymously or from an unusual source. She said confidentially prevented her from disclosing what triggered the special monitoring at Lancaster General.
