11-year-old Shot In Brooklyn May Have Been Part Of Group Of Kids Playing With Gun, Police Say

NEW YORK -- An 11-year old boy is recovering in the hospital from a gunshot wound, and police say he was with a group of friends and family when it happened.

CBS New York spoke with the boy's mother several times Tuesday. She was at her son's bedside. She said he's doing better.

Police said it appears a group of kids were playing in the hallway of a NYCHA building on Howard Avenue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, when the 11-year-old was shot accidently in the arm, adding a gun was found in the back of the building.

"I was in the house and then I heard the shots and then I came outside ... In the hallway," a woman named Fantasya said. "I took him in the house and then I wrapped my sweater around his arm to stop the bleeding and I just put pressure on it."

Fantasya said she applied pressure on his wound and prayed.

"I was just praying ... 'God, don't let this boy die on me.' Just prayed like that, and he stayed alive. So I already knew, it was God. It wasn't me; it was God," she said.

She said she called 911 and alerted his family members as he continued to bleed.

The boy, who many describe as fun and energetic, was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center, where he is recovering.

"He had no reaction. He didn't cry. He wasn't sad. He was just scared but not for himself, for somebody else," Fantasya said.

Investigators could be seen gathering a piece of bloodied clothing and combing the area outside of the building.

Detectives said the boy was hanging out with a group of friends and his sister when, all of a sudden, a gun went off. It's still unclear whose gun it was and how it went off.

"He said, 'I have to lay down.' I'm tapping him for head, kissing his forehead, 'No, stay up,' and I felt like another arm just cover and it was just me and him," Fantasya said.

Fantasya said she leaned on her faith and used the life-saving skills her mother taught her to help save the boy.

"I wasn't scared. I kept praying. I felt like he was protected ... Like, God was with us. He wasn't going to die," she said.

Police said there were a lot of teens around at the time of the shooting, and they're trying get everyone's story straight.

11-year-old, 14 Year Old Boys Shot At SW Atlanta Home

ATLANTA - Two boys are recovering in the hospital after police say they were shot in a domestic incident at an Atlanta home on Sunday night.

"Our officers arrived on scene, identified two juveniles who were shot," said Atlanta Police Captain Joshua Holt at the scene early Monday.

Officials described the victims as being an 11-year-old and a 14-year-old.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.M. At a home on Omaha Road in southwest Atlanta. Police officers found one of the victims at the house. Officials say someone drove the other boy around the block to a nearby gas station for safety.

Paramedics rushed both of the boys to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. As of the last check, both boys are expected to survive their injuries.

"This incident is isolated, domestic incident, is what our investigation is detailing right now," said Captain Holt.

Investigators say the boys did not shoot each other and called the shooting an isolated domestic incident.

FOX 5 cameras saw an adult male being led away in handcuffs at the scene. Officers have charged the man, identified as James Kimbrough, with reckless conduct, two counts of cruelty to children, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

"Too close to home, too close to home. It shouldn't happen all together nowhere," said Michael Davis who lives across the street. "I see them get off of the bus when I'm here at random times. They kind of play in the street a little bit."

Police have not specified the relationship between the man arrested and the two victims.

If you have any information that could help with the investigation, call the Atlanta Police Department.

11-year-old Shot, Man Dead In Brooklyn Gun Violence

An 11-year-old was among three people shot as deadly gunfire erupted in separate Brooklyn communities late Monday, authorities say.

An apartment hallway on Howard Avenue in Brownsville turned into a harrowing scene after the boy was shot in the arm just after 11 p.M., when neighbors reported hearing a loud bang as a group of unsupervised kids were hanging out.

One neighbor told NBC New York many of the kids said the boy shot himself. Another neighbor, 18-year-old Mamaz, who lives steps away from where the shooting happened, had the presence of mind to jump into action and apply a tourniquet to the boy's forearm.

"I just wrapped my sweater around his arm. Applied pressure. After that I took my sister's phone, called 911," Mamaz told News 4. "We went downstairs. He has relatives. So I knocked on the door. They helped us as far as calling his parents, calling 911."

Mamaz said the boy, whom she stayed with until an ambulance arrived, does not live in the building and was hanging out with a group of kids that included his older sister.

He was taken to Maimonides Hospital and is expected to recover. Police have not said how they believe the boy got shot, or whether it was accidental or not. An investigation is ongoing.

No description of a possible suspect was released by police, and no other details on that case were immediately available.

About three hours earlier, also in Brownsville, NYPD officers responded to multiple 911 calls of two people shot near Mother Gaston Boulevard and Sutter Avenue. Cops found a 50-year-old man shot in the chest and a 41-year-old man shot in the shoulder. Both victims were taken to a hospital, where the 50-year-old was pronounced dead.

He was later identified as Anthony Barlow, of Brooklyn.

The 41-year-old gunshot victim is expected to survive. No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information on either case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
